For decades, Huffines Plaza in Lewisville has been an unofficial gathering spot for day laborers.

Gabriel Cuevas has been a Texas resident for 38 years and lives in Lewisville. He and other day laborers are now looking for work at a convenience store near Huffines Plaza. The shopping center, along Interstate 35E near State Highway 121, provides quick and easy access for employers who need an extra hand willing to give a day's work for a day's pay.
While this informal employment system seems to have worked for years with few problems, day laborers no longer feel welcome at the plaza, where "no trespassing" signs have been posted recently and police have been asked to start enforcing trespassing laws.
City officials say they're trying to help retailers revitalize aging shopping centers, but the displaced workers seem confused by the sudden shift and say they're only trying to support themselves and their families the best way they can.
"All the cars would come from I-35 and see you. Then they started kicking us out. They didn't want us there," said Carlos Javier, 26.
"We're not homeless," unemployed construction worker Antonio Aleman said defiantly. "We're looking for work."
The "no trespassing" signs were posted at the plaza within days of John Gorena's election to the Lewisville City Council in a June runoff. Gorena, who has been outspoken in his opposition to illegal immigration, declined to speculate on whether there's a connection.
"It doesn't matter who gets credit. Something is being done," Gorena said. "I'm satisfied with the direction that we're going. But we have to do more."
He said most of the day laborers are here illegally and contribute to growing crime rates, overcrowding of schools and escalating medical costs. But Gorena, who is of Hispanic heritage, also thinks that the day laborers are being exploited by "greedy American employers."
He said the "pro-illegal-alien side has lots of money. We Americans have to stand up and fight."
Lewisville Mayor Dean Ueckert said the police action at the plaza had nothing to do with Gorena's election and the timing was only a coincidence.
He said the changes at Huffines Plaza are the result of several years of work by city officials to encourage owners to spruce up aging retail areas.
"Lewisville is almost 90 years old, and we're trying to do some revitalization of shopping centers," the mayor said. "They wanted to try to upgrade their shopping center and came to the conclusion they'd like us to ask the day laborers not to congregate on their property."
Alfred Goh, property manager for the plaza, could not be reached for comment. Ueckert said the center is not owned by the Huffines family that has area car dealerships.
Three years ago, Lewisville officials considered a day-labor center for workers, but the idea was strongly opposed.
"If they're legal and they want to find employment, an employment agency is a great place," Ueckert said.

It's just more evidence that our own government is trying to replace. They won't enforce the laws against them. But if you or I even parked our car in the wrong place you get ticketed or towed.
That's why I say we MUST stop finding our fellow Americans guilty of any crime when we serve on jury duty. Our founding fathers for-saw the day when this kind of corruption would come to be. That's why the placed 12 average citizens in charge of finding guilt or innocence in criminal trials. Because they knew the powerful elites would some day try and have a double standard of justice. Carved in stone above the supreme court are the words, "equal justice under law." Until our government starts to enforce the laws equally, we Americans should enforce the rule of law on our own.

Sure, why not. Better than those panhandlers in front of every store begging for money to support their drug and alcohol addictions. At least they are looking to be productive. Maybe they should beg for money instead and blend in with the US citizens.

Questions about moving to Atlanta?
I'm thinking about moving to Dallas or Atlanta during my optometry rotations to settle afterwards. I don't really see myself dead center of either city, unless the specific area is classy and well-kept. I'm also looking for which will be best for when I see my self in the outskirts of the city, suburb preferrably to start a family. Can you please copy, paste, and answer these questions? First a little about me. 27 y/o BM from St. Louis. Tired of ridiculous crime, and a downtown that still isn't "finished yet". Looking to move away, start a practice, and a family in either of these two cities. So here's my questions:
Is the traffic that horrible?
Autumn is my favorite seasons b/c of the temp, color changes, and leaves falling. Does this not happen in ATL?
ATL is similar but better than STL in crime. What are some good surrounding suburbs that are exempt?
How is nightlife?
Are there any historic parks (equivalent to Forest Park) and/or lakes nearby?
Any medical schools nearby?

I am a former atlanta resident moving back after I am done with Nursing school. Here are the answers to your questions.
Is the traffic that horrible?-
Answer: YES, YES, YES. I remember driving from Ohio to Georgia. I leave Ohio around midnight so I can drive at night and get through traffic. I got to the Fulton County Line at 7:30 am. I did not get to my grandmother's house in Dekalb County until 8:55am. This drive would normally be about 30 mins during Non Rush hour traffic.
Autumn is my favorite seasons b/c of the temp, color changes, and leaves falling. Does this not happen in ATL?-
Answer: This happens in Atlanta, the season does change. They just dont get a lot of snow. Maybe an inch or 2 all winter. One of the reasons why I am moving back to Atlanta.
ATL is similar but better than STL in crime. What are some good surrounding suburbs that are exempt?-
Answer: As far as crime. The western ( west end) and Southern Fulton county has most of the crime. Those cities are College Park, Jonesboro and Riverdale.
Suburbs that are nice and exempt are Buckhead, which is still in Atlanta city, has Atlanta address. Lithonia is a good city for African Americans. It is up and coming, has the new stonecrest mall. It is really nice out there. I plan on moving to this city. It is closer to my grandmother. As my grandmother says, Buckhead is Old money the older families of Atlanta, Lithonia is New money, where younger people are moving. She is a RN and has been in Atlanta area for almost 40 years.
Also Sandy Springs, which is in Northern Fulton County is nice as well as Marietta, which is in Cobb County. The cities that I have names are close to Atlanta so you wont have that much of a commute time into downtown.
How is nightlife?
Answer: Depends on what you like to do, You can go to the Underground or Atlantic Station. They have nightclubs there. Atlanta is so diverse, it keeps moving. So many places. I had my 28th birthday party down in atlanta in 2008. I liked it a lot. Driving from Ohio to Georgia for a party, you know I made it worth my while.
Are there any historic parks (equivalent to Forest Park) and/or lakes nearby?
Answer: Piedmont Park ,Lake Lanier, Lake Alatoona, Stone Mountain Park and Martin Luther King center etc.
Any medical schools nearby?
Answer: Emory University is a GREAT medical school. One of the best. There are some other ones but with a grandmother in the medical field and myself joining the field. This is top notch.
How are the hospitals?
Answer: For Professional, My grandmother said Starting out in the Medical field, Go to Grady since they are level 1 trama, they see basically everything and take medical cases etc that the other hospitals will not. For experience, go to Grady. For personal treatment, I would say Grady, Emory, Piedmont, Northside, those are the best hospitals. Gwinnett is so-so
Any Big12 or Big10 schools to tailgate on weekends?
Answer: This is the only one I dont know. I know University of Georgia, Georgia Tech have nice squads.
One last thing, where ever you move to in Georgia, they have a Valorem tax. When you register your car in the state, you have this tax you have to pay on top of getting your plates. Registering your vehicle every year. The tax depends on how close you live to Atlanta and the type of car you drive. The closer to Fulton county, the higher the tax.
Example, my grandmother drives a Lexus, lives in dekalb county, pays $600 in tax alone. My truck, a Trailblazer, I would have to pay $200-$300 in tax.

Well ATL is nicknamed Hotlanta because its so hot without the ocean but for season wise atl is hot hot hot in the summer.It gets nice to cool in autum and spring. Winter it snows litely averagely gets down to 33 F. STL (St Louis)????? yes it is but it has alot of crime not as much as Miami but alot. A- Automn in North GA is beautiful. We enjoy a full change of seasons and the colors are spectacular.

A- The best suburbs are all found on the north end of town. Marietta, Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth. There are also som fabulous intown neighborhoods like Brookhaven, Buckhead, Ansley Park. To name just a few

A- Fantastic. If you love clubs, live music, pro sports... Atlanta has it all.

A- There are two major recreational lakes near Atlanta. Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona. Both are Army Corp of Engineers properties and have limited development around the shores of the lake that keep the recreation side the major focus of the waterways. As far as parks the largest is Piedmont Park in midtown which is similar in size and scope to Central Park in NYC. There is Stone Mountain park east of town and several beautiful state parks close to the city.
Any medical schools nearby?
A- Yes. Emory University is one of the finest in the country.
How are the hospitals?
A- I have no personal experience with any of the hospitals but the main trauma unit is Grady Memorial in downtown Atlanta. There is also Emory University Hospital, St Josephs, Northside, Children's Healthcare and Kennestone in the area.
Any Big12 or Big10 schools to tailgate on weekends?
A- Atlanta is SEC territory and if you ain't a Dawg you ain't sh!t. Just kidding of course. UGA is 1 hour east of town. The SEC is the college division to watch in Atlanta. There is also the ACC with Georgia Tech right here in downtown Atlanta.

2. Autumn does happen in Atlanta. Atlanta has all 4 seasons. Hot winter, warm spring, cold winter %26amp; fall. So yes you will still see brown leaves %26amp; "naked" trees
3. I think the North Fulton County, Fayette County, some parts of South Fulton County %26amp;, Cobb County are pretty safe. I would most avoid the "ghetto" parts of South Fulton( contrary to belief not all of S.Fulton is ghetto. For example there is alot of "Old" and "New Money" that lives in South Fulton), Clayton County, Dekalb %26amp; Clayton County
4. Atlanta has a so-so nightlife. It's not that great. But it's not bad. Depends on what type of nightlife you are looking for. We have hip hop clubs, techno clubs, rock clubs, pop clubs.

- Traffic in ATL is 3rd worst in the nation behind Los Angeles and Washington DC;
- We don't really have autumn here in Atlanta, not alot of maple trees so the leaves don't really change, however we will have moderate temps;
- Alpharetta, Kennesaw, Sandy Springs are all nice places to live, I'd stay in either Cobb or Gwinnett Counties or North Fulton County. They tend to be the safer parts of Atlanta to live in.
- Nightlife is good, there are tons of restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. in ATL;
- Piedmont Park %26amp; Chastain Park are nice. The closest lakes are Lake Allatoona up near Woodstock or Lake Lanier which is near Gainesville;
- Medical Schools - i'm sure there are, I know of Emory; Depends what kind of medical school you are looking at.
- THere are quite a few hospitals: Northside, Children's Healthcare, St. Joseph's, Emory, Piedmont, Grady, and plenty of others.
- Football schools that play around here: Georgia Tech is the closest to Atlanta, then you have UGA but they play in Athens.

-- If you live reasonably close to where you work it's not horrendous. You'll learn the back roads and alternative routes. If you don't commute during the heart of rush hour, you'll be okay.

-- Autumn is beautiful, especially in the Georgia mountains. There are also a good number of fall festivals throughout the state. Georgia definitely has four distinct seasons.

-- No place is exempt -- but places like East Cobb, Roswell, Alpharetta, are reasonably safe. If you're single, you'd probably want to be in Atlanta-proper, maybe in Buckhead, midtown or downtown Decatur.

-- You can always find something to do. There are concerts, great restaurants, comedy and jazz clubs, a myriad of bars, theater..... If you're a 'get-up-and-go' kind of person, you won't be bored.

-- A good number of parks. I sometimes get up early Sunday mornings, and walk along the Chattahoochee which is lovely and peaceful. (You'll find it to be quite pretty here.)

- We don't really have autumn here in Atlanta, not alot of maple trees so the leaves don't really change, however we will have moderate temps;
- Alpharetta, Kennesaw, Sandy Springs are all nice places to live, I'd stay in either Cobb or Gwinnett Counties or North Fulton County. They tend to be the safer parts of Atlanta to live in.
- Nightlife is good, there are tons of restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. in ATL;
- Piedmont Park %26amp; Chastain Park are nice. The closest lakes are Lake Allatoona up near Woodstock or Lake Lanier which is near Gainesville;
- Medical Schools - i'm sure there are, I know of Emory; Depends what kind of medical school you are looking at.
- THere are quite a few hospitals: Northside, Children's Healthcare, St. Joseph's, Emory, Piedmont, Grady, and plenty of others.
- Football schools that play around here: Georgia Tech is the closest to Atlanta, then you have UGA but they play in Athens.
Is the traffic that horrible?
-- If you live reasonably close to where you work it's not horrendous. You'll learn the back roads and alternative routes. If you don't commute during the heart of rush hour, you'll be okay.
Autumn is my favorite seasons b/c of the temp, color changes, and leaves falling. Does this not happen in ATL?
-- Autumn is beautiful, especially in the Georgia mountains. There are also a good number of fall festivals throughout the state. Georgia definitely has four distinct seasons.
ATL is similar but better than STL in crime. What are some good surrounding suburbs that are exempt?
-- No place is exempt -- but places like East Cobb, Roswell, Alpharetta, are reasonably safe. If you're single, you'd probably want to be in Atlanta-proper, maybe in Buckhead, midtown or downtown Decatur.
How is nightlife?
-- You can always find something to do. There are concerts, great restaurants, comedy and jazz clubs, a myriad of bars, theater..... If you're a 'get-up-and-go' kind of person, you won't be bored.
Are there any historic parks (equivalent to Forest Park) and/or lakes nearby?
-- A good number of parks. I sometimes get up early Sunday mornings, and walk along the Chattahoochee which is lovely and peaceful. (You'll find it to be quite pretty here.)
Any medical schools nearby?
-- Emory, perhaps Clark-Atlanta (but I could be wrong about Clark)
How are the hospitals?
-- World class. Particularly Piedmont, Northside, St. Joseph's.
Any Big12 or Big10 schools to tailgate on weekends?
-- I'm not a sports person -- sorry -- but I know that people follow the UGA and GA Tech games.

CONSERVATIVES, do you like the idea of splitting the USA with us LIBERALS?
The more I think about it the more I like it.
Let's divide the US into Liberals and Conservatives.
We've become like a party of hikers stranded on a mountain slope. Half want to stay put and wait for rescue, and the other half want to get as far back down the slope as they can. Both sides could be right, both are willing to stake their lives on their ideas, and both are ready to kill the other side for resisting what must be done. So, let's split up.
The Liberals get the Northeast and both coasts: the blue states. If we get all the blue states from 2008, that includes New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida. Also, Hawaii. I'd throw in Florida for the Conservatives just to sweeten the pot. I suggest we name ourselves the Social Democratic States of America. The SDSA.
The Conservatives get the big center of the country and the gulf coast states. And Alaska. I suggest you call yourselves the Christian Confederation of America. The CCA.
During the partition there will be some messy splits, and a lot of dramatic exoduses and ethnic cleansing. Most of the city of Austin will be Liberals trapped far behind enemy lines, in the very Capital city of the Christian Confederacy! They will have to evacuate to North Carolina. Conversely, the entire population of Western Michigan will have to make a run for Missouri. A lot of Wall Street guys will be flying their private jets one - way to Dallas, while a lot of Liberal millionaires will say goodbye to their Montana ranches forever.
We have to split the federal debt and each pay off half, because both Rep. and Dems have borrowed all that money. Right now national debt is 12.9 trillion. A little less than half of that added up during the administration of Pres. George W. Bush (sorry, just had to point it out).
The Christian Confederation will eliminate income and business taxes, but they still have to find a way to pay back $6.5 trillion without that revenue. Take State revenues in Texas, the capital of the CCA. They make $21 million a year in sales tax and $26 million in income tax. Without income, sales tax will go to around 20%. Then, to pay make their federal debt payments, they may have to double that, maybe to 40% sales tax. Also, a lot of that is Social Security, which red - staters have been paying all their lives. I don't know if you're going to just tell all those would - be retirees that their money is gone, or pay them all back their money in one lump sum (in which case you'll have to borrow trillions more) or keep paying Social Security, but that's pretty Socialist.
Meanwhile, in the SDSA, taxes will be roughly like those in Western Europe. Most will pay 25%. The wealthiest pay a lot more income tax than now, up to 50% in the $1 million/ year income bracket. However, no one will have any medical, prescription, or education expenses.
We each get half of the military, because we both paid for it. So we each have enough nukes to keep us from invading each other.

I will be going to college in 2 years when I graduate high school.I live in Houston Texas. I don't know for sure what I want to major in but I am interested in being a nurse(I volunteer at hospitals in the medical center). I have been looking into going out of state for college because I am tired of Texas.

Since you know you want to go into nursing, your first consideration should be to see which schools offer the best nursing programs. Unfortunately, fewer people are pursuing nursing. While this creates a great job market opportunity, more and more schools have discontinued their nursing schools due to low attendance. So first research which colleges offer nursing programs.
The big consideration going out of state or staying in-state is that going to a state school in your resident state is cheaper for state residents. Unless you've got scholarships, financial aid or are rich, that's a big deal. Average private and out-out-state tuition costs are about $25,000 to $35,000 for tuition alone. And it usually goes up 7-8% every year. Since you are determined to go out of state, then also consider your travel, moving, and living costs. Think about how you will pay for all that.
Home schooling shouldn't be a problem in terms of academics if you've done well. If you've been well-acclimated and exposed to a lot of people in different social situations, you should be fine. If not, it might be a little overwhelming at first. But if you're someone that can adjust well to new environments, you'll be in a for a grand adventure.

Hey, I was home schooled as well, and am actually from Alaska. So first off, I'd have to say I do not recommend the U of Alaska in Anchorage. It's got good graduate programs, but for undergraduate you're better off somewhere else. Plus, it's cold and not a super city in the winter.
As far as in state vs out of state, I'm going to school in Georgia and I have to say I definitely recommend not going to school close to home. I think if you stay too close you end up not completely living and growing during your college years, plus it limits your choices. Try and go visit potential schools, stay overnight in a dorm and sit in on a couple of classes.
Just to plug my school for a second, if you're a girl Agnes Scott College has a great nursing program that we do with Emory University (a very well known medical school) and you would actually graduate with two bachelor's degrees, one from Agnes and one from Emory. We're a women's college though, so if you're a guy just ignore this last part lol.Should I go to college out of state? or stay in state?
I'm an eighth grader in Maryland. Already, I have pretty much decided that I don't want to go to U of MD. I am thinking of maybe Bennington (VT), or some college up northeast like that. There are some advantages to staying in your own state for college, like being close to home and your family. On the other hand, you might not like the college in your state very much. Have you investigated the college in TX you are thinking of? Maybe you should find out whether it is considered a good college, and let that influence your decision. It can be a really good thing to go out of state to college, it's sort of like an adventure.

I'm an eighth grader in Maryland. Already, I have pretty much decided that I don't want to go to U of MD. I am thinking of maybe Bennington (VT), or some college up northeast like that. There are some advantages to staying in your own state for college, like being close to home and your family. On the other hand, you might not like the college in your state very much. Have you investigated the college in TX you are thinking of? Maybe you should find out whether it is considered a good college, and let that influence your decision. It can be a really good thing to go out of state to college, it's sort of like an adventure.
