She doesn't when a stranger comes to the door - then she just barks which is natural - but any one familiar (good friends as well which she regards as her pack) she howls which is really ear piercing and living in inner city must really annoy the neighbours. We have tried ignoring it - yelling - putting her out the back, but nothing stops her. Can anyone help? How can I stop my 10yr old toy poodle howling when any family member comes home?
First, introduce her properly to your friends and family. Teach her that these people are here to be nice, let them pet her, be affectionate. Then when they come in you give her a treat (preferably her favorite) and do it repeatedly to teach her that it's good when people that are familiar come to your house. Don't ever hit her, because she'll become scared of your friends and family, thinking they're an instant whopping. Hopefully she'll be wagging her tail instead of barking like crazy when family and friends come over. Hope I helped :D
You'll need several family members to help you with this one. First off, barking may be natural, but perfectly avoidable. You can use this same technique to deal with the barking.
First, arm them with a treat before they come near your door. Have them come in. When she starts howling, and I mean RIGHT when she starts, snap your fingers or jolt her neck (Do not strike her - at least not so it'll hurt, and NEVER the face) so she stops. If she doesn't, make it impossible for her to continue. If she ignores you, you have a deeper problem and need to start asserting your authority. Your dog sees you as another dog, not as a 'higher being', so you need to let her know who's boss in this relationship. Who's 'Alpha Dog'. Yelling won't do any good, especially the more often you do it. Avoid yelling. When she stops, award he with a treat. Even if you have to stop her - treat her before she starts again. Pretty soon she'll associate the lack of howl with a treat, and the treat is associated with you being pleased. All dogs want to please you, so long as you're the boss.
It might take a couple weeks, but she'll learn. It might take her longer than a younger dog because of her age, but she will still learn. How can I stop my 10yr old toy poodle howling when any family member comes home?
As well as making life with your dog more enjoyable, training is the best gift you can ever give your pup; friendly, housetrained, well-behaved dogs are less likely to be surrendered to shelters or put down. Plus, training is a great way to bond with your dog or puppy.

I don't think so. Give her a walk every day, play ball and more.
