What is the most effective way to revitalize a toy's plush?

I have the set of collectors Myrtlewood Stables horses and because they're made of plush, the plush soon becomes un-shiny and bumpy instead of smooth. My friend told me that canola oil mixed with water will do the trick, but my mom told me that the stuff might go rancid. Please give me tips on the best way to revitalize my collector's plsuh. Thanks for your help! What is the most effective way to revitalize a toy's plush?
If your horse is not dirty, you might want to try one of those animal brushes with the metal "hairs". I used to clean up stuffed toys for charity donation by washing in washing machine and brushing when dry.
