Our little corgi has found a toy that he is overly fond of and when he has it he will not listen to us at all. I dont know whether to encourage this or get rid of the toy cos I dont want him so focused on play. We take him for 2 walks a day and are home with him most of the time and he gets lots of cuddles and praise. Can a dog become so toy crazy that you cant train them?
Are you crazy?? LOL that toy is like the ark of the covenant to you .... if you use it right it can become an incredibly powerful training tool. Take control of that toy right now and use it to your advantage to motivate your dog to learn tricks, commands etc My dog is crazy about his ball too, so much so that I can make him rollover 10 times in a row just by holding the ball in my hand and not even saying a word. Then I can make him do every trick he knows by command or hand signal before I reward him by giving him the ball. There are people out there that wish their dog had something they want so bad they'll do anything for it, the reason is if you have what the dog wants it gives you the ability to motivate the dog to learn to do whatever you want him to do. Because of my dogs obsession with his ball (and treats) he can now do the following tricks and commands, Heel up, pony up, figure eight, shake a paw, rollover, down, bang(play dead), sit, spin, jump, up, gimme a kiss, come, .... and all of these tricks also have a seperate hand signal that he also obeys without words. I suggest you take your dogs toy and use it to your advantage, because it is a powerful motivational tool to train your dog with....
I have 2 dogs and the one I mentioned is so trainable its incredible, my other dog is not at all motivated and she doesnt care about toys or treats so and she is far less trainable.. the only tricks she knows are speak, sit, down, shake a paw and come and she is far less willing to do any of the tricks than my other dog because she doesnt care about food or toys and I have nothing to motivate her with.
my dog loves lambies, but he doesn't ignor us when he has one. Maybe try to train you dog to not ignor you.Can a dog become so toy crazy that you cant train them?
NO keep the toy! This is great for training. If you want him to do something, dont let him have the toy untill he does it. Like tell him to sit. When he does, give him the toy
He's still trainable. It sounds like he just doesn't listen when he's distracted which you definitely want to train out of him, because if he gets away from you, you need to be able to call him back and know he'll listen.
You might want to work with training him with the toy. First I would teach him the "Leave it" command with treats. To do this, get your dog to sit and place a treat on the ground in front of him while saying "Leave it". If he goes for the treat, immediately pick up the treat, say "no" and put your dog back in a sit and repeat. They usually catch on pretty quickly, but if he starts to get frustrated, have him do another trick and give him a treat then go back to leave it. Once he's got "Leave it" with a treat, switch to the toy and train the same thing. That should help with getting him to still pay attention to you when the toy's around. Once you've got this down, let him have the toy back, but when he's playing with it, occasionally get his attention and tell him to do something. If he ignores you, take away the toy and keep it away from him for a few minutes.
If you have a PetSmart near you, they have trainers on staff and have a questions box where you can have the trainer call you and discuss your problem, so that's another great place to get advice on training. Can a dog become so toy crazy that you cant train them?
You stumbled on the perfect training tool!
Keep the toy out of site and use it as a training reward for a job well done. Your dog would probably do most anything when he gets that toy as a reward.
Good luck.
