Im thinking about getting it for my kitten. Whenever I introduce her to a new toy, she plays with it for a good hour and then after a few hours or a day she will want nothing to do with it. I hope the laser light toy will be one of those toys she cant get enough of.Are laser pointers are a good cat toy?
My 4 cats love it.
Just be real carefull not to flash it in their eyes as it could make them blind!
On One Hand: Psychological Issues
Some people believe that laser pointers are cruel because the cat will chase the red light endlessly but can never catch it. Cats are predators by nature, and seek to kill their prey in order to achieve satisfaction. The inability to grab the light could be potentially damaging to the cat's confidence and mental stability. The laser can also cause damage to the cat's retina if it is shined directly into the cat's eye.
On the Other: Good Exercise
The Animal Advocate, a publication of the Humane Society of Kent County in Grand Rapids, Michigan, states that laser pointers actually make great toys for cats. They say that the pointers promote physical exercise and allows a cat to practice her predatory instincts. Animal organizations like Animal Friends of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, suggest laser pointers as cat toys.
Bottom Line
The evidence shows that the main danger to cats regarding laser pointers is if the light is shone directly into the cat's eye for an extended period of time. Still, bear in mind that the cat may become frustrated with the process of chasing but never catching the light. If so, use a toy on the end of a stick (called a cat teaser toy) instead to get the cat active--this way he will be able to grab the "prey" he's chasing.
I hope this information is helpful.
Good Luck! Are laser pointers are a good cat toy?
It will definitely absorb kitty's attention. But I felt a bit cruel using it to play with my cat, since even after play, he would sit there watching the last spot he saw it at for a looong time, as if he's lost something important. We have disused it; strings and balls is best for my kitty :) If you use it, maybe read up on how to actually use it so kitty could know when the game starts and importantlly when the game end i.e. when you're done shine it on something that kitty can actually catch and satisfy he's hunting instinct, or point it to your hand each time and off to signal end game.
Have fun.
I found my cat loves hair rubber bands. Gently aim towards mid air and your cat will leap to catch them.Practice until they are almost slow motion. And you can keep a handful by the couch and fling them all before YOU need to retrieve them. Good source of exercise for indoor cats. She will let me know when she wants to play with them-she'll come to the edge of couch and stare at me intently untiI I do play with her. Its really amusing for me too. She has a few favorite bands that she will put in her water dish too. I don't like retrieving them , but that's her thing. Are laser pointers are a good cat toy?
I have 3 cats and I have spent a lot of money on different balls and fake mice toys etc. They are not so interested in them. I bought some cheap thick string in a ball, they play with it all the time. I even cut a bit off now and then and every time I dangle it, they go crazy and try to catch it... it's so cute :)
A REAL laser pointer is anything but a toy, and can cause serious damage and injury.
What's usually sold as such is just a focusses LED in a pen style casing, and does indeed make a nice toy for both kids and kittens.
YES!! they are a very good cat toy and can be used to tire out ur kitten to a point so it will actually sleep at night instead of attacking your feet like they looove to do.. and no she wont get bored of it kittens like shiny things
Laser pointers make excellent toys. However, don't use them too often because you can wear down the battery. Use other toys in addition to it.
And NEVER use your hand as a toy.
Yes. Buy the laser pointers with the different shapes; the ones for pets. Just make sure it doesn't really point to the eyes of your pet. =]
Yes. Amazon has one that goes for 15 minutes that my cat loves and gets some exercise.
My cat loves them!! When I point the laser at the wall, he tries to jump up the wall to grab the red dot. It's cute. Lol.
My cats and dogs love it just keep it out of the eye
