Can a regular Kong toy be used with a puppy?

I bought a normal Kong toy (size L) and then when I got home I read the brochure (conveniently hidden inside the package). It said that there was a special "Puppy Kong" toy. Annoying! Our dog is a large Lab mix who is five months old. He chews a lot. Occasionally there is a teeny bit of blood on something after he chews.

Can I give him the toy? What should I put in it? Is it necessary to freeze it prior to giving it to the dog?Can a regular Kong toy be used with a puppy?
Your dog will be fine. I never bought my dog a special puppy toy. Most of them are just marketing schemes to get more money from you. The puppy one costs less to make, is a lot smaller and costs more....

You said your lab mix is 5 months old, and chewing a lot with a little blood coming out. Sounds like you have a puppy who's teething!

The large kong toy should be just fine with him. He won't break it, and it'll get him through teething.

So go ahead and give him the toy. Put peanut butter, treats (biscuits), and cheese in there. It's not necessary to freeze it prior to giving to your dog, the stuffing inside it just lasts longer and the toy will be cold and soothing to a teething puppy.

Good luck!
The large size Kong will work perfectly for your lab. We have a lab as well, she just turned 12 months. She out grew the puppy size toys very quickly, so we have learned to go with the large toys. The extra-large are not necessary. (Side note, ropes are good too, but they need to be big and tough or he will unravel it. The small ones at the dollar store just don't cut it.)

Our lab was also teething around five months old. Best thing is give him ice cubes, they love them and they help numb the pain. You could also purchase toys you can fill with water and place them in the freezer if you prefer. However, the toys don't seem to last long with their sharp teeth. You could instead use a zip lock bag, put some water in, freeze it, and then take the block of ice out of the bag before giving to him. We did this and she loved it!

Out of all the toys out there, Kong by far has stood the test of time better than the Dog-zilla and other brands. Make sure he always has several rubber-type toys so he doesn't chew on your furniture. Will help keep him from getting bored as well. Hope this helps. Best of luck. Can a regular Kong toy be used with a puppy?
The regular Kong is actually better for your dog, since Labs have strong jaws. The puppy Kong is just a little smaller and more flexible, designed for puppy teeth. But since he's already 5 months old, his teeth are probably already falling out--the blood is evidence of that.

You can put the normal Kong treats inside, but I would go with a couple scoops of peanut butter. And no, you don't have to freeze it.
You don't need to freeze it or stuff it. Let him have it: too big is better than too small, and he'll outgrow the puppy size in a few weeks.

Teach him to retrieve it; dogs love the way Kongs bounce, because they bounce in random directions. It makes the dog's job, getting hold of it, more complicated, and they love it.

My dogs can't keep a Kong; the collie next door sees that they have one, charges her electric fence when my dogs are inside, and she steals the Kong and takes it home. Can a regular Kong toy be used with a puppy?
Well i have a border collie who has a large kong and she like to just chew it without anything. I think he will be okay with the kong. Don't freeze it. And as for what you can put in it well you can put broken milk bones or thinks like that. I don't suggest peanut butter it gets nasty. And as for the bleeding my dog sometimes has that problem when it happens i take that toy away and let them have it later.
Sure yes you can give your large Lab the kong. Put peanut butter in the kong and he won't have a reason to chew it b/c he will be busy licking the peanut butter out. When he is done take it and clean it very well and put the kong up high so he doesn't get it and chew it.
A 5 months he is probably big enough for the regular Kong.

Here's a good stuffing recipe. Take some of his kibble, and mix in just enough peanut butter to hold it together. Stuff the Kong with it.

You don't have to freeze it, but if you do, it will last longer. It's a nice treat for hot weather also. If he is still teething the frozen King will offer some pain relief.

There are more Kong stuffing recipes on the Internet. Just google. Here is one site as an example:

I have a Malteas Yorkie Mix and we had to get the puppy kong. It depends if your dog can git it in his mouth. My dog like the kong penut butter spray. She eats it alone. But Kong sells treats that fit in the toy or stuff for it. Good luck with the puppy. Mine likes to be the most annoying thing ever.
sure you can give it to him. my dog likes his filled with peanut butter that we freeze and then give to him.
Yes, that should be fine, but it would be best to watch the puppy. Five months is old enough.
