HELL YES!
There is NO reason that small dogs shouldn't go through as much (or more) training as large dogs. All dogs need training, and that is the responsibility that we take on, as owners, when we commit to caring for a dog!
Some people have the insane idea in their heads that a small dog is somehow less work or easier to care for, because they don't need training. It doesn't make any sense! They are still dogs, and will do "rude" dog things until they are trained otherwise!
yes. little dogs bite too.Do You Believe it is Just as Important to Obedence Train a Toy/Small Dog as it is a Large Dog?
Train the wee bug@@@s. Nothing funny about a dog that nips etc.
Heck ya!
For some reason it is socially acceptable for people to have rude and ill-mannered small breeds. I have even heard owners giggle and state the behavior is cute! Ack!
Could you imagine my giant breeds acting like those little buggers???
The only dogs I have been bit by at the hospital were small/toy breeds with zero training!Do You Believe it is Just as Important to Obedence Train a Toy/Small Dog as it is a Large Dog?
Yes,definitely.People think big dogs should have obediance training more so because they can be harder to handle if they're not trained, but it doesn't occur to them that those little nutjobs that had no socialization/training when they were young are stronger than they look and can do just as much damage with their teeth. They think it's cute when Fido yips uncontrollably.Everyone else thinks it's obnoxious.
I think it's necessary to train all dogs. The little ones are more likely to bite or run away and it's also a good way to bond with your pet.
Yes. All dogs need manners and boundaries. When a small dog joins the family, I plan on not letting him do anything I wouldn't let a big dog do. Also, small dogs aren't dolls. They also need to act like dogs and learn like dogs. Many smaller breeds excel at obedience because they're so eager to please. IMHO, it's not fair to fail to teach a dog that so desperately wants to be good.
I HATE toy breeds. But, someday I would like to buy one along with my adopted large breeds and try to overcome my hatred to small dogs. Because, I think that those "owners who act like its funny" and dont train their dogs whatsoever make me mad. I think people dont think they have to train their dogs because they are small and "less dangerous."
Last summer a Min Pin came up and bit my Labrador. Next thing you know my dog had the thing pinned to the ground. She didnt bite it, just pinned it to the ground. My sister who was 8 at the time was playing with my dog out in the yard. The owner kicked my dog and started YELLING at my little sister. My mom came out and apologized because my dog is the big mean dog who can do more damage. As soon as the owner left, threatening to have our dog removed if she ever off a leash. But, her dog attacked our dog and it wouldnt make a difference if my dog WAS on a leash, she was in the yard.
Most definately!! Many toy/small breeds are a vets/groomers worst nightmare...they are snappy , ill mannered and out of control. I don't see anything cute or funny about any dog that is ill mannered no matter what the size.
Absolutely these little dogs need to be trained. I have an 11 lb. shih tzu who was a wonderful demo dog for my training classes. I think that is why I got the little dogs in my classes when they would see that my little dog can actually act like a good dog and and she has her CGC certificate. I taught her all kinds of cute tricks and the kids would come in class, so they would take her out and work with her while their parents worked with their larger dogs. This way they didn't feel left out and they could get their technique down. I knew it would mess up on her trainer as far as she was with it. The toy breeds are so babied by the owners that they don't think that they need to be trained. I even had small dog classes just for them!! They act so differently than with larger breed dogs. I use to tell them, I don't treat my shih tzu any differently than my rottie. Same rules and boundaries.
Oh my word, yes!
Have you ever encountered a minpin who has had no training? Awful little beasts who bark all the time, snap at everyone and pee in the house.
There is NO excuse for not training your dog.
The number one reason small breed dogs are turned into rescue? The owners did not train the dog. They complain about the barking, the biting, the peeing, the chewing, and the whole time they don't get that that is all their fault!
Yes, it is very important. What's good for the big guys is good for the little guys too. As a large breed owner, (cute guy pictured), I would not go without training. Since he is purebred GSD, a lot of people are intimidated by his size or "I had a bad experience with a German Shepherd once". For the small breeds, I have seen and been lunged at by more poodles, puggles, and the like. And their owners always say the same thing, "He's small don't mind him, he thinks he's a big dog". Thankfully, my GSD is a big sweetheart and he is very patient with small breeds. I recommend obedience for all dogs. Regardless of the crazy looks of "why, he's so little" from all the small breed owners in my neighborhood. Dog bites hurt regardless of the size of the dog.
I believe it is even more important to train little dogs as because humans tend to treat them more like babies they end up thinking they are the top dog of the pack and have to look after everyone else, hence the aggression that can occur. Also smaller dogs are a lot more agile and harder to catch if they do not know the basic commands like sit, down, stay, come.
The reason why so many toy breeds are out of control is because we treat them like babies. They are dogs and should always remain so. Remember that to keep our dogs on an even keel temperament wise we must assure our dogs that we are calm and confident leaders of the pack and that they do not need to take over that role.
YES!
The amount of times I have seen unmanageable small breeds down the street is shocking.
I really don't know why people think its OK not to train small dogs.
Why on earth would one think that鈥檚 its alright.
I think the reason could be that they spoil the dogs, They are smaller so they get picked up, dressed etc and the dog does not respect them as leaders so the dog does its own thing.
YES!! A dog is a dog, no matter how small ;-)
All dogs need to be trained. I like small dogs - but I despise small, untrained yappy dogs.
YES! A responsible dog owner will train their dog regardless of size. Just because they can pick their dog up and remove it from a situation does not give them the right to let the dog run wild to begin with.
All dogs need to be trained. It is for their safety as well as for the safety of the people around them. I have a 13" Beagle who weighs about 24 lbs. She went through the same training that I would have given a giant dog. Poor behavior is never funny -- neither canine nor human.
I have 4 huge dogs, and a small dog, and a tiny dog.
They all get the same training. The only exception is what the tiny ones can do in the house. They get to scuffle on the floor..But, if the huge dogs did that, the house would fall down!
As you can see by these posts, toy dogs have a bad reputation..just as with the discrimination to other types.
However, just as with the big dogs, it is the owner's fault, for failing to train them to be good canine citizens.
I am trying to socialize my tiny Chihuahua to be a good therapy dog, and to be a good ambassador for Chihuahuas.
He is a doll, and loves to please, so I'm sure he will succeed..
