It makes no difference at all. A bit of duck scent on whatever you use is handy, but the dog really doesn't care what the item looks like. We used both in training dogs for field trials and hunting tests for 40 years.

Your techniques for training are far more important to the process than anything else. What is the best toy to use when training your dog to duck hunt?
I would suggest you use one of the stuffed ducks at the store. Not the ones that squeak, but the ones that actually make the duck sound. Hide it some places after your dog gets used to it and see if he/she can find it. I have a lab and she had a toy squirrel (it squeaked) and one day I let her out back and she came back with a squirrel in her mouth. I was amazed. She didnt hurt it though.. Id also teach my dog (if I were you) not to chew. My dog didnt chew the squirrel, she actually just let it go when I said drop it.
You'll need two different ones. There's one that uses 22 blanks to propel the dummy. This trains your dog to associate retrieving (fun) with a shot (scary). Helps them to over come gun shyness. The other is a floppy duck toy. Loose head, body and wings (get at Bass Pro, etc.). This gets the dog use to a semi-live bird flopping around. Most of all have fun with your dog.
