What is a great toy to occupy an 8 month old in the car for 3-4 hours?

We are about to drive north to visit family and my daughter is easily bored with her usual toys. Does anyone have some suggestions what would work best? Thanks! What is a great toy to occupy an 8 month old in the car for 3-4 hours?
When I travelled with my baby 11 hrs I brought the portable dvd player and put in a colorful movie like care bears, that worked off and on for the trip. you can also try a bag of dollar store toys and pull 1 out everytime she starts to get a lil bored. What is a great toy to occupy an 8 month old in the car for 3-4 hours?
When our now three-year-old was that young, we would try and plan car trips around her sleeping. Often, I would nurse her, she would go to sleep and my husband would put her in the car seat while I got the rest of my things ready and we'd leave. The movement of the car would keep her sleeping. Even now, at three, we try that, though it's not always successful. Our three-month-old son also sleeps easily in the car, too. When our daughter was a baby, we also learned to plan more stops, jsut to keep her going.

I don't agree with the DVD player. I'm not even sure if I would do that for our three-year-old. I have survived 33 years of road trips without something like that. When we were kids, my mom would let us buy new books (a treat in itself), crayons, coloring books, etc. to take on road trips to occupy us. She also had surprises as well. Even now, if the kids are sleeping, I like to sit and read in the car. Yesterday we went out for lunch at a favorite restaurant that is about 30 miles away. Both kids were sleeping and I relaxed with the new "Forbes" and read the biography on the Facebook founder. Even when I'm sitting and nursing my son in a quite house I don't normally get to read like that. Well, "Forbes" is my "heaviest" magazine, but even books. Currently, I have the February "Redbook" and the February "Baby Talk" in my diaper bag for when I sit and nurse him.

I digress. Overall, we found that when we drove while she slept worked the best.
